Expressive Arts
On one level, art-making can be just plain fun and relaxing. On another level, working intentionally with art processes can invite us into a deeper understanding of ourselves.
An Expressive Arts approach to art-making is grounded in the premise that art-making and creative expression are natural and accessible to all human beings. Engaging in acts of creative expression fosters self-exploration, personal growth, and optimal well-being. Expressive Arts experiences are user-friendly accessible activities that emphasize the process over the product. No previous artistic skills are required.
The Expressive Arts approach further recognizes that a “creative connection” exists among different art modalities and these connections can be imaginatively explored, leading one to a more integrated and authentic self.
For example, the creation of a collage may lead one to express its meaning in the form of a poem, a story, or even a dance. The process of communicating through image, metaphor, symbol, and myth allows us to express feelings which may be too deep for words, beyond the confines of rational, linear language. Through this mysterious process a deep sense of personal renewal is often experienced.
While working in the expressive arts modality may be experienced as therapeutic, it is not psychotherapy. Its value lies in opening us to engage deeply with our creative selves, which is our birthright as human beings.
